Madison was sorry he had to leave N.Y. before seeing him but he had ill and went home. He thought he would have seen Markham at the Cameo Club Banquet. He is much better now. Madison wasso happy to hear of the vacancy at Columbia College. He would love to work at the Library. He is writing Franklin Sherman and Christian Scollard at once. He appreciates it highly that Markham remembered him for the position.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
